Dear Peter,

I’m writing to tell you about a winter camp.

Our school is planning to organize an international Chinese literature camp for teenagers during the coming winter break. It’s aimed at sharing the joy of learning Chinese literature. Students with the same interest will get together for two weeks at a winter camp site. We will discuss our favorite books, read novels and essays as well as learn how to write poems. Also, each of the students will have the chance to show their own works. And there will be some other activities for fun.

I know you are interested in Chinese literature. If you’d like to join, please call us at 2369870 or email us at intliterature@gschool.com.

Yours,

Li Hua

第一节

Text 1

M: What are you getting to eat?

W: Meat pizza and Greek salad. What about you?

M: Cheese pizza and a cup of coffee.

Text 2

M: Hi, Keith! Your brother James looks younger than you.

W: You are right, but actually he is two years older than me. He is twenty.

Text 3

W: What kind of person do you consider yourself to be?

M: I think I’m polite, careful, relaxed and shy.

W: Oh, I don’t think you’re shy! You are always chatting with new people when we go to a party.

Text 4

W: Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The train to Sinchu is arriving in 15 minutes at Platform 5.

M: Did you hear the announcement? Let’s go to Platform 5 now.

Text 5

W: Hi, Peter. It has been sunny this week.

M: Yeah, happy with that. The weather this year has been strange. It snowed a lot last week, and
the weather forecast said it will be windy next week.

Text 6

W: Why did you run out of the room and shut the door like that?

M: I was so angry then.

W: How dare you say that? Do you mean I misunderstood you?

M: To be frank, you did, I think.

W: OK, but can you first explain what you did with the cash I left?

M: The dog was sick and I didn’t want to call you on your vacation, so I used the money to take him to the animal hospital.

W: Now, everything is clear. It’s my fault.

M: I’m glad you can say that.

Text 7

M: Are you going to Helen’s birthday party this Friday?

W: I won’t miss it! It’s certain to be fun. She’s invited a lot of people.

M: If everyone turned up with a lot of flowers and fruits, it would be crowded.

W: Are you taking anything?

M: I’ve got her a birthday present and I’ll take a bottle of wine too.

W: That’s a good idea. She said she had bought plenty of food and snacks.

M: I’m really expecting it. This party is going to be fun!

W: Well, don’t be late. I’ll see you on Friday evening at Helen’s.

Text 8

M: Hi, could you tell me why there are so many red clothes in the shop? I don’t like them.

W: Well, in China the color red is often associated with happy things like joys and celebrations.

M: Do you mean people like to be in red on happy occasions?

W: Exactly so. For example, some people here wear red wedding dresses. What about this color in your country?

M: It’s the opposite. In the States, red mostly represents bad things, such as danger or violence.

W: So we should be careful in choosing colors.

M: I agree. Could you tell me more about it?

W: Once I was in South Africa, when I saw many people wearing red clothes, I thought there must be a wedding.

M: What really happened then?

W: To my surprise, they were holding a funeral ceremony!

Text 9

W: Hello! This is Mary. May I speak to Peter?

M: This is Peter. Speaking.

W: Hi Peter! It’s Mary. Thank you for the message about the meeting. But I’m sorry I won’t be there next Friday, because I will be away on business then. Can somebody else go to the meeting instead of me?

M: Yes, I think so. Please make sure your assistant will be present at the meeting.

W: OK. But what’s the meeting about? I’ve no idea. Is it about the new department manager? Or
another new product?

M: Eh, not exactly. It’s about how to improve our service.

W: When and where will the meeting be held?

M: The meeting will begin in Room 603 at two o’clock next Friday afternoon.

W: How long will it last?

M: For about one hour.

W: Who will chair the meeting?

M: The manager of our company.

W: Thank you very much.

M: No problem. It’s my job.

That suggestion is bad news to many people. After all, rice is a main part of Chinese diet; potatoes of German diet; and spaghetti of Italian diet. These foods are also called comfort foods. A comfort food reminds you of home and, well, comforts you. But now, a new study suggests that spaghetti doesn’t make you fat. In fact, spaghetti may make it less likely that you will become overweight.
Licia, from Germany, head of a research team who conducted the study in Italy, says the popular view these days is that spaghetti is not a good choice when you want to lose weight. But, she says, “According to this research, that view is not a correct attitude.” However, Licia warns that people with high level of blood sugar should avoid eating spaghetti. This kind of people should eat a diet that includes a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits.
